The following items explain how to customize, create, restore, or remove existing menu items.
To Reset All Menus to Their Defaults
- On the Tools menu, click Customize.
- Click the Toolbars tab.
- In the Toolbars list, click to select Menu Bar. Do not clear the Menu Bar check box.
- Click Reset. Word will display the Reset Toolbar dialog box with the following message:
Reset changes made to 'Menu Bar' toolbar for:
Normal.dot
NOTE: If you are making changes to the menus of a custom template, make sure your custom template name appears in this box.
- Click Close.
To Add a New Menu
- On the Tools menu, click Customize.
- Click the Commands tab.
- In the Categories list, select New Menu.
- In the Commands list, click New Menu.
- Drag New Menu from the Commands list to the menu bar. Release the mouse button when you see a vertical bar indicating the position of the new menu.
- Right-click New Menu on the menu bar, type a name in the Name box, and then press ENTER.
- Click Close.
NOTE: To add commands to the menu, use the steps in the "To Add an Item to a Menu" section of this article.
To Add an Item to a Menu
- On the Tools menu, click Customize.
- Click the Commands tab.
- In the Categories list, select the menu you want to customize. For example, click View on the menu bar.
- In the Commands box, click to select the command you want to add to the View menu. For example, click View Field Codes.
- Drag View Field Codes to the View menu. Release the mouse button when you see a horizontal bar indicating the location on the menu where the command will be inserted.
- Click Close.
To Remove an Item from a Menu
- On the Tools menu, click Customize.
- Click a menu item.
- Drag the command you want to remove into the document.
- Click Close.
To Modify Text or Change a Button Image on a Menu
- On the Tools menu, click Customize.
- Click a menu item.
- Right-click the Menu command.
- Choose an action from the drop-down menu.
- Click Close.
Restoring a Menu That You Deleted
- On the Tools menu, click Customize.
- Click the Commands tab.
- In the Categories list, select Built-In Menus.
- In the Commands list, click the command you want to add to the menu bar. For example, if you deleted the View menu, click View.
- Drag View from the Commands box to the menu bar. Release the mouse button when you see a vertical bar indicating the position of the menu.
- Click Close.
