WD2000: Windows Installer Starts When Starting Word 2000

ID: Q230085

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When Word 2000 and Word 97 are installed on the same computer, the Windows Installer may start unexpectedly when you start Word 2000.

CAUSE

The Windows Installer is designed to automatically find and fix errors when an Office 2000 application is started.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Office 97 applications are self-registering by design. As it starts, Word 97 enters information into the system registry associating itself with the ".doc" file extension type.

Subsequently, when Word 2000 is started, its resiliency features check the appropriate registry entries. Upon seeing that Word 2000 is not the associated application for ".doc" file type, it starts the Windows Installer to correct the entry.
