WD2000: Error Message When Saving Document As Web Page

SYMPTOMS

When you save a document as a Web page, the following error message may appear:

This feature requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.00 or greater. You can install IE5 from the Internet Explorer folder on the Microsoft Office 2000 CD or download it from the Internet Explorer site on the Microsoft Web.
When you click OK, the following error message appears:
A file error has occurred.
Try one or more of the following:
* Check the disk or the disk drive to make sure the disk is properly inserted.
* Check the disk or the disk drive to make sure there is not a hardware problem.
* Check the network connections.
(<drive\name>

Where <drive\name> is the drive letter and the first six characters of the path where you are saving the Web page.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you do the following:

  • Start your computer in Windows safe mode or start Word with the /a startup switch.


  • -and-

  • Save a document as a Web page.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the appropriate method for your situation.

Method 1: Restart your computer without selecting safe mode. You can save your document as Web page.

Method 2: Restart Word without the /a switch. You can save your document as a Web page.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


MORE INFORMATION

The /a switch allows you to start Word and prevent add-ins and global templates (including the Normal template) from being loaded automatically. The /a switch also locks the setting files; that is, the setting files cannot be read or modified if you use this switch.
