WD2000: Discussion Remarks in Online Collaboration Result in Garbage Text

ID: Q231395

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you use Online Collaboration (on the Tools menu, point to Online Collaboration) to enter a discussion in a document, text that is typed may appear as ANSI (garbage) text in the discussion remarks instead of readable text.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when members of the discussion are using different keyboard layouts.

For example, if one member types using the English (U.S.) keyboard (with left-to-right formatting) and another member types using an Arabic or Hebrew keyboard (with right-to-left formatting), the collaborated document will have ANSI characters in place of the discussion remarks.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the same keyboard layout when collaborating on a document.

The following is from the Wdread9.txt readme file:

Use the Same Keyboard Layout When Collaborating on a Document:

During an online meeting, participants can take control of a document to review and edit its contents. All participants must use the same keyboard layout when collaborating on a document. This enables Word 2000 to tag text with the appropriate language encoding and correctly display text on the screen.

For information about how to switch the keyboard layout for your computer, type "switch keyboard layouts" in the Office Assistant or on the Answer Wizard tab in Word 2000, and then click Search.
NOTE: The Wdread9.txt file is located by default in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
