WD2000: Click and Type May Not Work Correctly with Right-to-Left Word 2000 Documents

ID: Q231435

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

NOTE: This article discusses complex scripts functionality. Complex scripts functionality is available when you use the Office Language Settings tool to enable a language, such as Arabic or Hebrew, that requires this functionality. For more information about multilingual features, click Microsoft <your Office product> Help on the Help menu, type multilingual features in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Click and Type feature in a right-to-left paragraph, the feature may not work properly. Instead, when you try to use Click and Type to change the paragraph alignment, the paragraph always remains right-to-left with right alignment, regardless of your keyboard settings, where you clicked in the document (center, left, right), or what the previous paragraph setting was.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when both of the following conditions are true:

  • The Microsoft Office Installation Language is set to a right-to-left language (Arabic, Hebrew, and so on).

    -and-

  • There is no existing Normal template, or the Normal template has been created under a right-to-left language.

The Click and Type feature is only supported in left-to-right paragraphs. When used in right-to-left paragraphs, Click and Type may not work properly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Click and Type allows you to position your insertion point anywhere in the document and start typing immediately from that point. The right-to-left property exists in the Normal style, which is applied by Click and Type code to paragraphs that are inserted.
