WD2000: Pressing SHIFT+F3 Removes Comment Shading

ID: Q235038

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you press SHIFT+F3 to change the case of text that has been commented, the yellow shading may disappear. Also, when you rest the mouse over the comment, you do not see the ScreenTip for the comment. If non-formatting characters are hidden, all visual cues identifying the location of your comment will disappear, but the comment will be retained.

NOTE: This behavior also occurs when you use the Change Case command on the Format menu and select any of the options except Sentence case.

WORKAROUND

Because the shading used by the comment functionality is a special shading that is not visible when your file is printed or previewed, you should not apply highlighting to the comment unless you want the highlight to be printed.

Although changing the case removes the shading, the comment is retained. To view comments, click Comments on the View menu. To see the comment reference marks, click the Show/Hide button on the Standard toolbar. Or click Options on the Tools menu, click the View tab, click to select the Hidden text check box in the Formatting marks section, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
