WD2000: Error Message: "Setup Cannot Find the Program You Selected" Installing Avery Wizard 2.0

ID: Q238236

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you have Microsoft Word 2000 installed when you install the Avery Wizard version 2.0, the following error message may appear:

Setup cannot find the program you selected.

Microsoft Word 97

The Avery Wizard may not work until the selected program is correctly installed.
When you click OK, Setup continues and the Avery Wizard is installed. However, when you try to run the wizard from the Start menu, the following error message appears:
Cannot run Microsoft Word. Please start Word first, then start the Avery Wizard.
After you start Microsoft Word 2000, you can access the Avery Wizard.

CAUSE

Avery Wizard 2.0 is not designed to work with Word 2000. It looks for Microsoft Word 97 in the registry. If Word 97 has never been installed, the error message appears when you try to run the wizard from the Start menu.

WORKAROUND

Although Microsoft does not recommend that you use the Avery Wizard version 2.0 with Word 2000, you can work around this error message and run the wizard until Avery releases an update. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. When you receive the following error message, click OK:
Cannot run Microsoft Word. Please start Word first, then start the Avery Wizard.

MORE INFORMATION

The "Starting the Avery Wizard from Word" Help topic in the Avery Wizard includes a third method for starting the wizard:

On the File menu, choose New, then select the Avery tab and choose Avery Wizard.
This method does not work. The Avery Wizard Setup program installs the wizard in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\Avery
If you did not upgrade Word 97 to Word 2000, Word 2000 does not find this path. This is because Word 2000 installs templates in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033
Word 2000 also does not store templates in subfolders. For additional information about how Word 2000 installs and finds templates, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q210884 WD2000: General Questions and Answers About the Location of Word 2000 Templates
If you upgraded Word 97 to Word 2000, the Word 2000 Setup program creates a shortcut to the original templates folder. Therefore, you should be able to start the wizard by clicking the shortcut to the original templates folder and selecting Avery Wizard.
