WD2000: Error Message: "Unknown Switch Argument" Opening Danish Word 97 Document

SYMPTOMS

After you use English (US) Word 2000 to open and update a Danish Word 97 document that contains fields, the following error message may appear in your Word document:

Unknown switch argument


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the field switches contained in the fields in the document are in Danish and are not translated into English (US).

NOTE: Danish Word 97 uses English (US) field names but Danish field switches.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

Method 1: Download and Use a Macro

To download a document with a sample macro for replacing the field switches, please go to the following Microsoft Web address:
http://www.microsoft.com/Danmark/technet/news/990917_word.asp

Method 2: Manually Change the Field Switches

Turn on field codes and manually replace the Danish field switches with their English (US) equivalents.

NOTE: To turn on field codes in your Word document, press ALT+F9.
