SYMPTOMS
When you create an index, it may contain extra index entries. This occurs when the index entry contains a word that begins with an umlaut letter (for example, ä, ö, ü)
. CAUSEThis problem occurs because Word may sort characters differently based on your document and enabled language settings. In some cases, the umlaut vowel may be sorted as a separate word instead of part of the intended word. WORKAROUNDUnlink the INDEX field and remove the unwanted headings manually. To unlink the field, select your index and press CTRL+SHIFT+F9. This converts the index to ordinary text and you can make the required changes. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
