WD2000: Word Crashes When Embedding TrueType "Characters in Use Only"

The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMS
When you save a document with embedded TrueType fonts, Word may crash. An error message similar to the following may appear:
In Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the following message appears:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in WINWORD.EXE at 0137:304860b2.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

In Microsoft Windows NT
An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
Winword.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address 0x304881c0.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are met:
- The Embed TrueType fonts option under Save options is selected.
-and-
- The Embed characters in use only option under Save options is selected.
NOTE: To access the two above options, on the Tools menu, click Options and then click the Save tab. Or click Save on the File menu and then click Tools. On the Tools menu, click General Options.
-and-
- You are embedding a font for which there is a separate *.TTF file for bold but no separate *.TTF file for bold/italic; for example, Tahoma.
-and-
- There are at least 32 characters of this font formatted in bold in the document.
-and-
- There are also characters of this font formatted in bold/italic in the document.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, clear the Embed characters in use only option. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open your Word document that is exhibiting this problem.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Save tab, clear the Embed characters in use only check box, and then click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed
at the beginning of this article.
