New Features Lost in Conversion to Word 5.5, 5.0, 4.0 Format

ID: Q102983

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If your document contains formatting that you applied using a new feature in version 6.0, such as the Table command, that formatting is lost if you convert the document to the Word version 5.5, 5.0, or 4.0 file format.

For example, if you insert a table in Word 6.0 and then convert that document to an earlier version, the table formatting is lost. If you open the converted file in Word 6.0, the table formatting is not restored.

If you add TrueType font bullets to your Word version 6.0 document using the Insert Bullet command, each bullet changes to "(?)" (a question mark enclosed in parentheses) when you convert the file to Word 5.5, 5.0, or 4.0 format and open the document in Word 5.5.

STATUS

This functionality is by design.
