Errors During User Setup with Novell Logical Map Drive

ID: Q103353

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 5.5, 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Word for MS-DOS Setup program and select the Setup User option to install Word on a Novell workstation, the following error message may occur when Setup attempts to copy SCREEN.VID file components to your user directory:

Setup is having trouble creating the file X:\<filename>

CAUSE

This error occurs if the user directory is a logical drive created using the Novell MAP utility. Setup does not recognize these mapped drives, so it attempts to write to the root directory of the mapped drive. If you do not have Create privileges on that directory, the above error occurs.

For example, if you use the Novell MAP utility to map the F:\USER\NAME user directory to the logical drive X, Setup attempts to write SCREEN.VID component files to the root directory of the mapped drive (in this case, F:\). The following is the Novell command that maps the sample drive described above:

   MAP X:=F:\USER\NAME

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Do not map the user directory. Setup Word in the unmapped user directory.

After you install Word in an unmapped directory, you can manually move the installed files to the mapped drive.
