WordBasic Error When Starting Word from File Manager or Mail

ID: Q105296

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SYMPTOMS

A WordBasic error (generally 124) occurs when you double-click a Word document in File Manager or when you activate an embedded Word object in Mail.

CAUSE

Word for Windows is registered incorrectly in the Registration Database (REG.DAT),

If multiple international versions of Word for Windows have been installed on the same machine, the registration database may have different languages in the various Word settings. For example, a line may be in French from an earlier install of the French version while the current active version is English. Since the English version does not understand French, it generates the WordBasic error.

RESOLUTION

  1. From Program Manager's File Menu, choose Run.

  2. On the command line, type regedit and press ENTER.

  3. Once in the Registration Info Editor, scroll down the list to Word Document.

  4. From the Edit menu, choose Modify File Type.

If multiple versions (international) of Word have been on the system, the command line may be in the language of the version that is not currently in use.

To solve the problem, make sure the command line points to the desired version with the corresponding language and is not launching any macros. Also, check the other boxes in the Registration Info Editor to make certain each is in the correct language.

As an additional step make sure there is not an AutoExec or AutoOpen macro that could also be interfering.
