Printing Large TrueType Font Size Produces Blank Page
ID: Q105603

-
Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0
SYMPTOMS
When you print large font sizes (near 630 points) to a Hewlett-Packard
(HP) LaserJet Series III, IIIsi, IIIP, IIID, or LaserJet 4 printer, a
blank piece of paper prints instead of the large character.
When you print on the HP LaserJet 4 printer, a "Memory Overflow" error
occurs on the printer.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with the HP printer
drivers for these printers (HPPCL5A.DRV and HPPCL5E.DRV). We are
researching this problem and will post new information here in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WORKAROUNDS
- If you format the font for a smaller point size, the document prints
correctly.
-or-
- Print the document on a PostScript, dot-matrix, or HP DeskJet Family
printer. These printers print the large font sizes correctly.
-or-
- Select the "Print TrueType as Graphics" option in the Print Setup
Options dialog box for the printer driver. To open this dialog box,
do the following:
- In Windows Control Panel, choose the Printers icon.
- In the Printers dialog box, select your HP III Series or HP 4
printer and then choose the Setup button.
- Choose the Options button.
- Select the "Print TrueType as Graphics" option and then choose OK.
- Choose OK in the Printer Setup dialog box, and then choose Close
in the Printers dialog box.
- Switch to Word and print your document. The large font sizes
should now print correctly.
Note: The drawback to this workaround is that the "Print TrueType as
Graphics" option slows down your printing speed. You may want to clear
this option when you are not printing large font sizes.
