WD: TA, TC, XE, PRIVATE, Fields Shaded When Nested

ID: Q105892

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

There are four fields in Word that are not shaded, even when they are selected and Field Shading is set to Always or When Selected: the TA, TC, XE, and PRIVATE fields. However, if any of these fields is inserted inside a different field, it will be shaded just like the rest of the field.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. These four fields are called "dead" because they don't display a result; they are merely used by other fields. Any non- dead field is shaded when Field Shading is turned on.

You can set Field Shading to Never, Always, or When Selected by clicking Options on the Tools menu (in Word 98 Macintosh Edition, click Preferences on the Tools menu), and then clicking the View tab.
