Toolbar Button Faces Look Bad in Small Button Mode

ID: Q106017

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Toolbar button faces created with the Large Button option selected look bad when you turn off the Large Button option to switch to small button mode. If you create a button face in small button mode and then switch to large button mode, the button face graphic remains small; in other words, Word doesn't scale it to fill the large button.

Note: The Large Button option is part of the Toolbars command on the View menu.

CAUSE

Word for Windows provides Windows no instructions on how to shrink the toolbar button face images. As a result, large button faces do not look as attractive after Windows shrinks them to a smaller size, and Windows does not increase the size of small button faces when you switch to large button mode.

STATUS

This is by design in Word for Windows. This is not a problem with Word form the Macintosh.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following workarounds to improve the appearance of your button faces:

  • Create or edit all your button faces in small button mode and then run Word with the Large Button option turned off. Similarly, if you run Word with the Large Button option selected, create or edit all your button faces in large button mode.

  • -or-

  • If you want to switch back and forth between small and large button modes, create two different toolbars--one in small button mode and one in large button mode.
