WD: New Custom.dic Is Not Created in the TOOLS-PATH Directory

ID: Q107082

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When Word automatically creates the Custom.dic file, the file is not created in the location specified by the Tools-Path setting in the Windows Registry (Word 7.0), the Winword6.ini file (Word 6.x for Windows), or the Word Settings 6 file (Word 6.x for the Macintosh).

Instead, Word creates the file in the shared proofing tools directory, usually C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof (Windows 95) C:\Windows\Msapps\Proof (Windows 3.1), or the Macintosh HD:Microsoft folder (Macintosh).

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, click Options on the Tools menu, select the File Locations tab, and note the location of the "Dictionaries" (Word 6.x- 7.x) file type. After Word creates your Custom.dic file, copy it to this directory.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word listed above.
