How to Convert WordPerfect 6.x Documents to Word

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

A WordPerfect 6.x for Windows import text converter is available for Word 6.x for Windows users. This converter, which is supplied on the Supplemental WordPerfect Conversions Kit disk, reads WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS and Windows files, and WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows files.

Currently, Word 6.x is not able to save files into the WordPerfect 6.x file format. For additional information about the Supplemental WordPerfect Conversions Kit, please see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

Word 6.0 for the Macintosh users can open WordPerfect 6.x files by using one of the following methods.

Method 1:

While in WordPerfect 6.x, save the documents in the WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 format. Then use the WordPerfect 5.x converter supplied with Word 6.0 for Macintosh to import these documents. To save a WordPerfect 6.0 document in WordPerfect 5.1 format, complete the following steps:

  1. From the File menu, choose Save As


  2. Specify a new file name


  3. In the Format field, choose the WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 option.


  4. Choose OK to save the file


NOTE: WordPerfect 5.1 and 5.2 share the same file format.

Method 2:
To convert multiple WordPerfect 6.0 documents, WordPerfect users can order ConvertPerfect 2.0 for DOS by contacting WordPerfect Fulfill Plus at (800) 321-4566. ConvertPerfect supports batch conversion of WordPerfect 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.1 files to WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 format.

The BatchConversion macro supplied with Word 6.0 for the Macintosh can subsequently be used to batch convert the WordPerfect 5.x files generated by ConvertPerfect into Word format.

For more information on Word's batch conversion macro, double-click the Help icon in Word, type "readme" (without quotation marks) and press Enter twice. Select the Supplied Macros topic and view the Conversion Macros topic.
Method 3:
You can also save your WordPerfect 6.x for DOS or Windows documents in Word for Windows 2.0 or RTF formats and open from either format directly into Word 6.0 for the Macintosh. To save a WordPerfect 6.0 document in Word for Windows 2.0 format, complete the following steps:

  1. From the File menu, choose Save As


  2. Specify a new file name


  3. In the Format field, choose Rich-Text-Format (RTF) option or the most recent Word for Windows 2.0x option available (2.0b in WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS, and 2.0c in WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows)


  4. Choose OK to save the file


Method 4:
WordPerfect 6.x for DOS or Windows users can save documents in the Word 6.0 format. To save a WordPerfect 6.0 document in Word 6.0 format, first obtain the updated WordPerfect export converter and complete the following steps:

  1. From the File menu, choose Save As


  2. Specify a new file name


  3. In the Format field, choose the Word 6.0 option.


  4. Choose OK to save the file

The following third-party conversion products currently support conversion of WordPerfect 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.1 formats to Word formats.
