Word Does Not Include Visual Basic, Applications Edition

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word for Windows does not include the Visual Basic programming system, Applications Edition. Instead, Microsoft has made enhancements to WordBasic and added support for OLE Automation as a server only.

For information on the WordBasic enhancements, do the following:

Word 7.0

  1. On the Help menu, click Microsoft Word Help Topics.


  2. Click the Contents tab, double-click the WordBasic Reference book, select "What's New in WordBasic" and then click the Display button.


Word 6.0

  1. On the Help menu, click Contents.


  2. Click the "Programming with Microsoft Word" topic.


  3. Click the "What's New in WordBasic" topic.


Object linking and embedding (OLE) Automation is a Windows protocol that allows an application to share data or control another application. OLE Automation replaces dynamic data exchange (DDE).

Word 6.0 for Windows provides other applications with an object called "Basic." Using this object, other applications that support OLE Automation (such as Visual Basic 3.0) can send WordBasic instructions to Word for Windows. Word, however, cannot use OLE Automation to access other applications.
