First Two List Levels Have Same Multilevel Numbering Level

SYMPTOMS

When you apply multilevel list formatting using the Bullets And Numbering command on the Format menu, Word for Windows may format the first two levels of your list using the same predefined multilevel format.

CAUSE

Word may apply the same multilevel format if you change the default tab stop setting to less than .5 inch (if the default International Measurement setting in Windows Control Panel is English) or less than 1.25 cm (if the default is Metric).

Word determines the predefined multilevel indent levels by dividing the indent setting by the International Measurement setting in Windows Control Panel. For example, if the indent is .5 inch, Word divides by .5 and formats the paragraph for multilevel list Level 1. Similarly, if the indent is 1 inch, Word formats the paragraph for multilevel list Level 2 (1 inch divided by .5 inch = 2). Word does not use the default tab setting to determine the predefined multilevel list settings.

As a result, if the default tab setting is less than the International Measurement setting, Word formats the first two list levels for Level 1. For example, if your default tab setting is .4 inch, Word incorrectly formats both the unindented paragraph and the paragraph with a .4-inch indent as Level 1, as shown in the following example:

    1. Second Level List (.4-inch indent)

WORKAROUND

Manually promote or demote the levels in your multilevel list using the following shortcut key combinations:

Promote Level: ALT+SHIFT+Left Arrow

Demote Level: ALT+SHIFT+Right Arrow
