WD: No Way to Cross-reference a Numbered Item in a Numbered List
ID: Q110016
|
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
-
Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
-
Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
SYMPTOMS
When you number a list by clicking the Numbering button on the Formatting
toolbar, or by clicking Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu, the items
on the list do not appear in the Cross-reference dialog box.
For example, if you typed the following steps and numbered them with the
Numbering button, none of the steps are visible anywhere in the Insert
Cross-Reference dialog box.
- Break the eggs into a bowl.
- Beat them with a fork. If you bought pre-beaten, pre-
seasoned eggs, skip to step 4.
- Add seasoning.
- Heat butter in a skillet.
- Pour the eggs into the skillet.
NOTE: The reference in step 2 to step 4 must be typed manually.
WORKAROUND
To have Word suggest user-typed paragraphs in the Insert Cross-references
dialog box, follow these steps:
- Highlight the list to select it.
- Remove the numbering by clicking the Numbering button on the Formatting
toolbar.
- On the Format menu, click Style.
- In the list of Styles, click Heading 1. Click Apply.
- On the Format menu, click Heading Numbering.
- Select any heading style in the top row of examples. Click OK.
Now when you place your insertion point where you want a cross-reference,
and you click Cross-reference on the Insert menu, all the items on the
list appear when you click Heading in the Reference Type list.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in
