WD6X: Undoing an Update to an Index May Not Work as Expected

ID: Q110300

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

After you update an index to change its format, clicking Undo from the Edit menu may not restore the index to its prior appearance.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because inserting an index involves two actions. First, Word defines the Index Heading automatic style to conform to the format chosen for the index in the Index And Tables dialog box. Second, Word compiles and inserts the index in the document. Clicking Undo from the Edit menu applies the Undo command to the insertion of the index only; it does not undo the change to the Index Heading style.

RESOLUTION

Performing a second Undo command should return the index to its original appearance. You can also perform multiple Undo commands by clicking the arrow next to the Undo button and then selecting the actions you want to undo (in this case, the last two).

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
