WD: Custom Footnote Reference Mark Added to Custom Dictionary

ID: Q110323

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

A custom footnote reference mark inserted as normal text from the Symbol dialog box is added to the custom dictionary along with the word it is placed next to.

CAUSE

When a footnote reference mark is inserted as normal text, the spelling checker treats the reference mark as it does any word or character other than symbols. The Symbol font is special in that the characters are protected. This means you can change the font of a symbol character without changing the symbol itself. For this reason, the spelling checker does flag a footnote reference mark if it is inserted from the Symbol character set.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a symbol from the Symbol character set when you insert special symbols for custom footnote reference marks.
