Name Truncated on Custom Text Toolbar Button

ID: Q110416

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If you create a custom text button for a toolbar, the toolbar text may become truncated after you switch to a new video driver and restart Word for Windows.

CAUSE

If you create your custom text button while the "small fonts" version of a video driver is running, then switch to the "large fonts" version of the video driver, the toolbar text no longer fits in the button, so some letters at the beginning and end of the button text are cut off. Word does not adjust the size of the toolbar button to accommodate the new font size.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To correct the problem, modify the toolbar button using the following procedure:

  1. Display the toolbar that contains the button you want to modify (use the Toolbars command on the View menu).

  2. From the Tools menu, choose Customize.

  3. Select the Toolbars tab.

  4. With the mouse, select the toolbar button you want to modify.

  5. Point to the right edge of the button. When the mouse pointer shape changes to a two-headed arrow, drag the button to a new width.

  6. In the Tools Customize dialog box, choose the Close button.

An alternative workaround is to delete the toolbar button and re-create it.
