Font Not on Substitutions List Still Available

ID: Q110442

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

A font contained in a document may appear missing from the Font Substitutions dialog box. The correct font, however, appears both on screen and when the document is printed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following two conditions are met:

  • The font referred to is a non-TrueType font.

  • "Show Only TrueType Fonts in Applications" is selected in the Fonts section of the Control Panel.

MORE INFORMATION

Word has no way of knowing that "Show Only TrueType Fonts in Applications" is selected. Windows simply refrains from listing non-TrueType fonts when Word asks for a list of fonts.

Word considers any font in the document, but not listed, as missing. However, when Word asks Windows to load the font, it actually does. Thus, the same font is substituted for the missing font, and the proper font is displayed and printed.
