WinWord: Letter Wizard Produces Error Messages

ID: Q110443

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new document with the Letter Wizard, you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • The wizard cannot find the style template letter2.

  • -or-

  • The wizard cannot find this letter. Please choose another.

CAUSE

The wizard cannot find the style template letter2

  • The Letter Wizard cannot locate the required templates it needs to complete the wizard. The templates the wizard is searching for are LETTER1.DOT, LETTER2.DOT, and LETTER3.DOT. If these templates are not in the <WINWORD>\TEMPLATES subdirectory as specified by the Tools, Options, File Locations, then the wizard is unable to locate the above listed templates and generates the error message noted above.

  • -or-

  • The CONFIG.SYS file does not contain the line:
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
    When this command is missing, you cannot perform certain file input and output (I/O) operations. It is necessary for local as well as network I/O operations.

The wizard cannot find this letter

The Letter Wizard cannot locate the prewritten letter template files. The Letter Wizard looks to the <WINWORD>\LETTERS subdirectory, by default, for all of the prewritten letters.

RESOLUTION

Increase the FILES setting in your CONFIG.SYS to 60. Use a text editor to place the following line in your CONFIG.SYS:

FILES=60

The wizard cannot find the style template letter2

Situation 1:
To correct this problem, move the LETTER1.DOT, LETTER2.DOT, and LETTER3.DOT templates back to the directory specified in the Tools, Options, File Locations template path.
Situation 2:
Open your CONFIG.SYS file in a text editor such as Windows Notepad and add the following line
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
where "C:\WINDOWS" is your Windows program directory.

The wizard cannot find this letter

To correct this problem, ensure that the prewritten letter templates are in the <WINWORD>\LETTERS subdirectory, or modify the WORDWIZ.INI file to add the path for the prewritten letter template files. To modify the WORDWIZ.INI file:
  1. Run Notepad and edit the WORDWIZ.INI file from the Windows directory.

  2. Locate the [Letter Wizard] section and add the "letters-path=<path>" line. For example:
    [Letter Wizard]
    letters-path=<path>
    where <path> is the full path to where the prewritten letter templates can be found.

  3. Save the WORDWIZ.INI file, and exit Notepad.
