Word Err Msg: Could Not Write to File Named...

ID: Q110784

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows, version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

If you run Setup for Word 6.0 for Windows while Publisher 2.0 is running, you may receive the following error message:

Could not write to file named:
<windows path>\SYSTEM\PUBOLE.DLL!
This file is currently being used by another application.
Please shut down your other applications.
When you choose Cancel (your only option), the following error message is displayed:
Setup is not yet complete. If you quit now, this product will not be correctly installed. Quit the setup of the product?
Your only option is to select Yes.

If you try to start Word 6.0 for Windows the following error message is displayed:
Wrong OLE DLLs. Run Setup again.

CAUSE

Words 6.0 ships with newer DLLs than Publisher version 2.0. When Publisher is running, it keeps all these older DLLs in memory. Words 6.0 Setup has to add the PUBOLE.DLL for object linking and embedding (OLE) functionality. When Setup finds the older DLL on the hard drive, Setup tries to write over it but can't because the older DLL is being held open by Publisher.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, close Publisher and rerun Word 6.0 for Windows Setup.
