How the Spell Checker Checks Uppercase and Lowercase Words

ID: Q110866

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

The Word 6.0 for Windows spelling checker follows a case hierarchy when checking words in uppercase and lowercase letters:
  • If you add a word in uppercase letters to the custom dictionary, the spelling checker flags the lowercase and title case forms of the word. To have the spelling checker ignore these forms of the word, you must add the forms of that word to the custom dictionary.

  • If you add a word in title case letters to the custom dictionary, the spelling checker ignores the uppercase form of the word and flags the lowercase form.

  • If you add a word in lowercase letters to the custom dictionary, the spelling checker ignores both the uppercase and title case forms of the word.
