SUMMARY

This article describes the procedure for adding, modifying, and deleting one or more data sources for an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver.

For more information about ODBC, see pages 624-632 and 677 in the Word for Windows "User's Guide" or query on the following words in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

A data source associates a particular ODBC driver with the data you want to access through that driver. The data sources that are defined for all the ODBC drivers currently installed on your system are listed in the Data Sources (Driver) list box in the Data Sources dialog box. For example, you might create a data source to use the ODBC dBASE driver to access one or more dBASE files found in a specific directory on your hard disk or a network drive.

You can add multiple data sources, each one associating a driver with some data you want to access using that driver. You need to give each data source a name that uniquely identifies that data source.

Adding a Data Source

  1. In Windows Control Panel, choose the ODBC icon.

  2. In the Data Sources dialog box, choose the Add button.

  3. From the Installed ODBC Drivers list, select the driver for your data source and then choose OK.

NOTE: If you performed a complete Word 6.0 installation, four ODBC drivers should appear in the Installed ODBC Drivers list in the Add Data Source dialog box:

  4. dBASE (.dbf)
    FoxPro (.dbf)
    Access (.mdb)
    Paradox (.db)
  5. A driver-specific Setup dialog box for the data source appears. Supply the required information and then choose OK. If you need assistance, choose the Help button.

  6. Choose Close in the Data Sources dialog box, and close Control Panel.

Modifying a Data Source

  1. In Windows Control Panel, choose the ODBC icon.

  2. In the Data Sources dialog box, select the data source you want to modify from the Data Source Name list and then choose the Add button.

  3. Change the data source information and then choose OK.

  4. Choose Close in the Data Sources dialog box and close Control Panel.

Deleting a Data Source

  1. In Windows Control Panel, choose the ODBC icon.

  2. In the Data Sources dialog box, select the data source you want to delete from the Data Source Name list and then choose the Delete button.

  3. Choose Yes when Control Panel prompts you to confirm the deletion.

  4. Choose Close in the Data Sources dialog box, and close Control Panel.
