Setup Error: "Specified Directory Is Setup Server File."

SYMPTOMS

During a workstation installation of Word for Windows, the following error message may appear:

Specified Directory <directory name> is setup server file, type a different directory.

CAUSE

This error occurs after you complete a server installation of Word, if you then try to perform a workstation installation to a subdirectory of the server.

For example, if the server installation of Word is on X:\WINWORD, the above error will occur if you then attempt to perform a workstation installation of Word on X:\WINWORD\USER.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

Install Word in a different directory.
