Toolbar Buttons Appear Flat on Hercules Monochrome Display

ID: Q112500

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

Toolbar buttons in Word 6.0 for Windows may appear flat on Hercules monochrome displays. This makes is difficult to determine whether toolbar buttons, such as the Bold button on the Formatting toolbar, are in the up or down position.

CAUSE

The Button Shadow color is set to the same color as the Button Face, typically white. (To locate the Button Shadow color setting, open Windows Control Panel, choose Color, choose the Color Palette button, and select the Button Shadow from the Screen Element list.)

RESOLUTION

The Button Shadow color option must be set to a color different from the Button Face color. Since the Button Face defaults to white, the Button Shadow color should be set to black.

To Change the Button Shadow Color

  1. Open Windows Control Panel.

  2. Choose the Color icon.

  3. Choose the Color Palette button.

  4. From the Screen Element list, select Button Shadow.

  5. From the Basic Colors grid, select black.

  6. Choose OK.

  7. Exit the Control Panel.

MORE INFORMATION

The Hercules Monochrome display adapter provides only two colors for the display: black and white. By default, the Windows driver for this adapter card uses white for both the button face and the button shadow colors.

Although using white for both of these screen elements works well for conventional command buttons, it does not work well for buttons that indicate an up or down position.
