WD6X: WordPerfect Endnote Number Not Converted Correctly to Word

ID: Q113050

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.x
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.x

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 6.x, if you open a WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS or WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.2 for Windows document containing endnotes, endnote reference marks and endnote numbers are not converted correctly. Endnote numbers accompanying endnote text are not superscripted, and the converted endnotes are not renumbered if you move them or if you add endnotes to the converted document.

This problem does not occur with converted footnotes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, redefine the endnotes after conversion. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the PRIVATE field that appears on the first line of the converted document. If the PRIVATE field does not appear initially, click the Show All button on the standard toolbar to display the field.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Cut to remove the PRIVATE field.

  3. On the View menu, click Footnotes.

  4. Select the text content of the first converted endnote (excluding the endnote number) and on the Edit menu click Copy.

  5. In the document associated with the endnote, select the endnote reference mark and press DEL (do not choose Cut from the Edit menu).

  6. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Select Endnote and click OK.

  7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

Repeat steps 3 through 7 for each endnote in the converted document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 7.x and later.
