SYMPTOMSIf you open a Microsoft Word for MS-DOS document that contains underlined text in Word for Windows, the underlining may not be displayed. Similarly, if you save a Word for Windows document in Word for MS-DOS file format, underlined text may not be displayed when you reopen the document in Word for Windows. Word for Windows retains the underline formatting, but the underline formatting is not displayed. CAUSE
The default line spacing setting in Word for MS-DOS is 1 line or 12 points.
To preserve this line spacing and minimize pagination change, Word for
Windows converts line spacing to an exact point size setting. With the
Exactly line spacing setting, text is displayed correctly, but text with
underline formatting does not fit in the space, so the underline is not
displayed.
WORKAROUNDIn Word 6.0 for Windows, change the Line Spacing setting to Single. With this setting, Word automatically adjusts line spacing to accommodate underline formatting. Change the Line Spacing setting to Single by choosing Paragraph from the Format menu, select the Indents and Spacing tab, in the Line Spacing box choose Single, and choose the OK button. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 6.x for the Macintosh, Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows NT, and Microsoft Word 7.0 and later for Windows.
