The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If you set a password for a master document, close the document, and then reopen it, Word opens the document without prompting you for the password. Furthermore, if you open the Save Options dialog box, the Protection Password box is empty; Word has not retained the password. (To open the Save Options dialog box, choose Save As from the File menu and choose the Options button.)

Note: This does not happen with a Write Reservation password. Word prompts you for the Write Reservation password as expected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0, 6.0c and 6.0a for Windows and Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.
