WD6x: Macro Recorder Records Number Format "None" Incorrectly

ID: Q113871

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1

SYMPTOMS

When you record a macro that changes the number format for Heading Numbering or Bullets And Numbering to None, and then run that macro, Word generates error 158:

The value of one of the fields is too low
This error occurs when the macro contains the WordBasic command FormatNumber or FormatHeadingNumber.

CAUSE

This error occurs because the .Type argument for the FormatHeadingNumber or FormatNumber command is recorded as "-1" and -1 is not a documented option in Word version 6.0 (only 0-7 are documented options.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0 for Windows NT and Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.
