Cannot Scale Microsoft Excel 4.0 Object in Word 6.0

ID: Q114742

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

If you open in Word 6.0 a Word 2.x document that contains a Microsoft Excel 4.0 object, you will not be able to scale the object. This problem does not occur with a Microsoft Excel 4.0 object that is embedded in a Word 6.0 document.

CAUSE

The \S switch in the EMBED field, added when the object was embedded in Word 2.x, prevents the object from scaling. Objects embedded in Word 6.0 do not contain this switch.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Use the following procedure to allow scaling of the object:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Options and select the View tab.

  2. Under Show, select the Field Codes check box and then choose OK.

  3. A code similar to the following will appear in place of the object:

          { EMBED ExcelWorksheet \s  \* mergeformat }
    Delete the \s from the field code.

  4. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

  5. Under Show, clear the Field Codes check box and choose OK.
