The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

If you choose Yes when the following message appears while you quit Word for Windows, a general protection (GP) fault in the WINWORD.EXE module may occur:

You placed a large amount of text on the Clipboard. Do you want this text to be available to other applications after you quit Word?

CAUSE

The GP fault occurs if all of the following conditions are true:

  1. Your NORMAL.DOT global template contains boilerplate text and has been previously saved (your Normal template is not open).

  2. You created a new document based on NORMAL.DOT and inserted a picture in the document. The picture must be either a .BMP or .PCX file or a screen capture you created by pressing PRINT SCREEN or ALT+PRINT SCREEN.

  3. You copied the picture file to the Clipboard.

  4. While the picture file was still on the Clipboard, you quit Word (it does not matter whether you save the document or not).

  5. When the "...large amount of text on the Clipboard" message appears, you chose Yes. (It does not occur if you choose No.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.
