Error Message: "You Requested a Topic in Readme.Hlp..."

SUMMARY

Word 6.0 and 6.0a Help contains a documentation error in the "Answers to Common Questions about Microsoft Word" topic. When you choose the File Conversions topic, the following message appears:

You requested a topic in readme.hlp, which is not installed. Quit Word, run the Word Setup program, and select the Add/Remove button. Select the On-line Help check box, choose the Change Option button, select the item, and choose the OK button.
These instructions are incorrect. Reinstalling Help will not solve the problem. To locate this message:

  1. From the Help menu, choose Technical Support.


  2. Choose "Answers to Common Questions about Microsoft Word."


  3. Choose Answer to the question "I have a file in another program. Can I work on this file in Word?" (This is question 7 in Word 6.0 and question 8 in Word 6.0a.)


  4. From the question and answer screen, choose File Conversion.



WORKAROUND

  1. When you encounter the above error message, choose OK.


  2. From the Help menu, choose Search For Help On.


  3. Type readme and choose Show Topics.


  4. Select README Help and then choose Goto.


You can now successfully access file conversion information.
