Replacing Text with Drawing Object Results in Hang

ID: Q115270

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Word 6.0 or 6.0a for Windows, when you replace a footnote text entry with a drawing object using a Clipboard entry, you receive the following error message:

You cannot put drawing objects into a text box, callout, annotation, footnote, endnote, or macro.
After you choose OK and cancel the Replace dialog box, if you choose Undo Typing In Footnote from the Edit menu, Word hangs (stops responding).

CAUSE

When you replace text with Clipboard contents, Word deletes the text and then inserts the Clipboard contents. When the replace does not occur, the text remains deleted. There is no "Undo" option for this action. Choosing Undo Typing In Footnote causes an endless loop when Word tries to undo something that is not there.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
