How to Use the Word 6.0 for MS-DOS Supplemental Converters

ID: Q115939

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 6.0

SUMMARY

The following are instructions for using the DisplayWrite, MultiMate, WordPerfect, and WordStar converters supplied with the Word 6.0 for MS-DOS Converter Kit. These instructions are excerpted from the cover letter that accompanies the kit.

  1. Copy the appropriate conversion program to your Word program directory or to the disk containing the document you want to convert. If you need to install the DisplayWrite conversion program, switch to the DW directory on the conversion disk and copy the entire contents of this directory to your Word program directory or to the disk containing the document you want to convert.

  2. Start the converter by typing the following command at the system prompt:
    ProgName SourceFile DestinationFile Switch
Substitute the following information according to the utility and word processing program you are using.

"ProgName" is the name of the converter. It must be in the current directory or in the path. To convert other word processing documents into Word format, type Prog_RTF. Replace "Prog" with one of the following: "MM" for MultiMate, "WS" for WordStar, "WP5" for WordPerfect version 5.0 or 5.1, or DW for DisplayWrite. To convert word documents to other formats, type RTF_Prog. Replace "Prog" with one of the previous word processing choices. Before you run RTF_Prog, save the Word file as RTF by choosing RTF Format in the File Save As dialog box.

"SourceFile" is the name of the document after you convert it. The name must be different from the "SourceFile" name. You can include a path.

"Switch" specifies the exact version of the word processor. The following table shows the switch to use for each program.

          Word Processor Switch
          -------------- ------

          DisplayWrite no switches needed
          MultiMate 3.3 mm
          MultiMate Advantage mma
          MultiMate Advantage II mma2
          MultiMate 4 mm4
          WordPerfect 5.0 wp5.0
          WordPerfect 5.1 wp5.1
          WordStar 3.3 ws3.3
          WordStar 3.45 ws3.4
          WordStar 4.0 ws4.0
          WordStar 5.0 ws5.0
          WordStar 6.0 ws6.0
          WordStar 7.0 ws7.0

For example, to convert a WordPerfect 5.1 file named LETTER.WPD into the Word format, type:
WP5_RTF LETTER.WPD LETTER.DOC WP5.1
(WP5_RTF is the "ProgName", LETTER.WPD is the "SourceFile", LETTER.DOC is the "DestinationFile", and WP5.1 is the "Switch").

For details on using a particular conversion utility, see the README.DOC text file. This file is on your disk in the directory with the converter.
