Demo Stops After Clicking Application on Top of Demo Window

ID: Q116369

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you choose Examples and Demos from the Help menu, the online example or demo may hang (stop responding) if the demo clicks the mouse on another application that is running on top of the demo.

For example, if you are running Microsoft Office Manager (MOM) and the MOM toolbar is on top, the Word for Windows online demo may inadvertently click on the MOM toolbar when it performs a mouse operation. This happens if the MOM toolbar is positioned over the top of a location where the demo clicks the mouse. The mouse activates the MOM toolbar instead of performing the Word demo operation.

Sometimes you can continue the Word demonstration by clicking in the demo window to reactivate it; in other cases, the demo hangs, and you must close and restart it to continue.

CAUSE

The online examples and demonstrations in Word are not simulations; they are automated demonstrations of real Word operations. So when the demo performs a mouse click, it is a "real" mouse click, just as if you'd manually clicked the mouse yourself. As with a "real" mouse click, the demo mouse click activates the window in which you click.

WORKAROUND

Before you run an online example or demonstration in Word, make sure no programs, such as How To help screens, clocks, or the MOM toolbar, are running on top of your desktop.

To move the MOM toolbar to the background, clear the Toolbar Is Always Visible option. (To locate the Toolbar Is Always Visible option, choose the Microsoft Office button on the MOM toolbar. From the menu that appears, choose Customize, and then select the View tab.)
