Cannot Open Documents or Data Files from Network Location

ID: Q116458

6.00 6.00a WINDOWS kbnetwork
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Windows for Workgroups versions 3.1, 3.11

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a document, insert a database, or attach a mail merge data source that is located on a network drive, Word for Windows may fail to open the file, and the Open dialog box remains open. No error message occurs. This happens regardless of the file format or method (such as DDE, ODBC, or converter) you select if Word prompts you to confirm the file format.

The document or data file opens correctly if it is located on a local hard or floppy disk.

CAUSE

If the computer name of your network server contains a space, Windows for Workgroups cannot read it, so you cannot open the file in Word. Under Windows for Workgroups, computer names cannot contain the space character.

WORKAROUND

Rename your network servers so their names do not contain any spaces.
