Error Message: "Word Cannot Sort Fields in the Selection"

• Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
• Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

You will receive the following error message when you try to sort a selection that includes INCLUDE fields:

Word cannot sort fields in the selection.

CAUSE

By design, you cannot sort across multiple files. Included documents are considered separate files.

RESOLUTION

You must unlink the included documents to perform your sort. To unlink included documents, select them and press CTRL+SHIFT+F9.
