Bookmark in Text Box Produces GP Fault in Header or Footer

ID: Q119697

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When your header or footer contains a bookmark in a text box, you may receive the following error message:

Winword caused a General Protection Fault in Module Winword.exe at 00DE:44B7
The fault occurs after you perform a full save, when you try to edit the bookmark, or when you use the GoTo command and choose the bookmark name used in the header or footer.

CAUSE

After a full save or autosave, the bookmark is stripped from the text box and no reference to it can be made. If you try to reinsert the bookmark, or reference or edit the bookmark, you will receive a general protection (GP) fault in WINWORD.EXE.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
