Default Document Location Not Retained

ID: Q119745

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you open the File Open dialog box, a directory other than the default directory may be active. This behavior occurs even though you have defined a path for Word documents using the Documents setting in the File Locations Options dialog box. (To locate this setting, choose Options from the Tools menu and select the File Locations tab.)

CAUSE

This problem occurs on a Novell workstation where the default document path has been set to a mapped drive. In this case, Word resets the document path to the first drive that is able to map to the same network location. For example, if you have the following map statement in your Novell login script

map f:=pompeii/sys:
map h: = pompeii/sys:user\fred\docs
and you set H: as your default document path (in the File Locations Options dialog box), the File Open default drive may revert to F:\user\fred\docs. Note: The Drive does not have to be a mapped root drive.

This behavior is by design.

RESOLUTION

Add the following statement to the [Microsoft Word] section of the WINWORD6.INI file:

NoLongNetNames=yes
This statement disables universal naming convention (UNC) support.
