Letter Wizard Retains Large Top Margin on Subsequent Pages

ID: Q119747

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

If you select the letterhead option when running the Letter Wizard and create a letter that exceeds one page, the second and subsequent pages will retain the large (2-inch) top margin.

CAUSE

The Wizard uses one of three templates when creating a letter. Each template is defined so that the top margin is set for the entire document. This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

After you complete your letter, you can modify the top margin for the second and subsequent pages by doing the following:

  1. While in Normal View, locate the page break. This appears as a single dotted line across the screen. Position your insertion point immediately above this page break. Ensure the insertion point is at the end of a paragraph or on a blank line at the end of the first page.

  2. From the Insert menu, choose Break. Under Section Breaks, select Next Page. Choose the OK button.

This inserts a double-dotted line with the words "End of Section" above or in place of the original page break. If the page break is one that Word inserted automatically (a "soft" page break), the page break will disappear. If the page break was manually inserted (a "hard" page break), select the page break and delete it.

  3. Place the Insertion Point below the section break, on page 2 of the letter, and choose Page Setup from the File menu.

  4. Select the Margins tab. Modify the Top Margin setting. In the Apply To box, select either "This point forward" or "This section," and then choose the OK button.
