Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1
SYMPTOMS
The Newsletter Wizard supplied with Word for Windows does not provide
character formatting options (for example, you cannot change the font or
point size of characters).
WORKAROUND
To modify the character formatting in the Newsletter Wizard, use the
following method to modify the styles in the Newsletter Style templates
(Classic1.dot, Classic2.dot, Classic3.dot, Classic4.dot, Modern1.dot,
Modern2.dot, Modern3.dot, and Modern4.dot if you are using Word for
Windows; Classic1 News Format, Classic2 News Format, Classic3 News Format,
Classic4 News Format, Modern1 News Format, Modern2 News Format, Modern3
News Format, and Modern4 News Format if you are using Word for the
Macintosh).
NOTE: Microsoft does not support the modification of its wizards or
templates. Modifications done by the user are at the user's risk and
constitute no obligations or warranties, either written or expressed, by
Microsoft.
- Before you modify your Newsletter Wizard or any of its style templates,
make backup copies of the following files (depending on which version of
Word you are using):
Word for Windows (files are located in the Template folder)
Classic1.dot
Classic2.dot
Classic3.dot
Classic4.dot
Modern1.dot
Modern2.dot
Modern3.dot
Modern4.dot
Word for the Macintosh (files are located in the Templates folder)
Classic1 News Format
Classic2 News Format
Classic3 News Format
Classic4 News Format
Modern1 News Format
Modern2 News Format
Modern3 News Format
Modern4 News Format
If something goes wrong while you modify your Newsletter Wizard or one
of its templates, you can restore the backup copies.
- Run the Newsletter Wizard and select the settings you want to use. After
the wizard is finished, note the style name of the text you want to
reformat. For example, if you want to change the font for the
headlines, note the Headline1 or Headline2 style. Once you have noted
the names of all the styles you want to change, continue with step 3.
- Open the template that corresponds to the style of newsletter you
created in step 2 above:
Newsletter style # of columns Newsletter style template
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Classic 1 CLASSIC1.DOT (Classic1 News Format)
Classic 2 CLASSIC2.DOT (Classic2 News Format)
Classic 3 CLASSIC3.DOT (Classic3 News Format)
Classic 4 CLASSIC4.DOT (Classic4 News Format)
Modern 1 MODERN1.DOT (Modern1 News Format)
Modern 2 MODERN2.DOT (Modern2 News Format)
Modern 3 MODERN3.DOT (Modern3 News Format)

you make all the changes, click OK in the Modify Style dialog box.
- In the Format Style dialog box, choose the Close button.
- Repeat steps 5c through 5f until you have modified the formatting in
all the styles you want to change.
- To modify text formatted with the Normal style, do the following (to
modify text formatted with any other style, use step 5):
- Select the text you want to modify. Include the paragraph mark or
end-of-cell marker in your selection.
- Manually reformat the text. For example, to change the font size,
choose Font on the Format menu.
- Repeat steps 6a through 6b until you have modified the formatting of
all the Normal style text you want to change.
