Workstation Setup Fails with [LotusMail] Group in WIN.INI File

ID: Q119868

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

Your workstation setup abruptly quits and displays the following error message:

Setup has encountered a problem. Please report
file = '.\copyfile.c', line = '72' to Microsoft Product
Support Services.
This error occurs near the end of the workstation setup, when the program groups and icons are being built. This problem has been reported on Novell networks but may affect other networking environments as well.

CAUSE

This error occurs when the drive assigned on the program= line in the [LotusMail] section points to a valid network drive that does not contain WMAIL.EXE.

For example, the WIN.INI file contains the following section:

     [LotusMail]
     application=wMail
     program=x:\WMAIL.EXE SendMail
where "x:" is a network drive.

WORKAROUND

Edit the WIN.INI file to "comment out" (disable) the section causing the abrupt termination of setup. To do this, use a text editor such as Notepad. Place a semicolon in front of each line in the [Lotus Mail] section:

   ;[LotusMail]
   ;application=wMail
   ;program=x:\WMAIL.EXE SendMail
Save the WIN.INI file, restart Windows and rerun the workstation setup. When setup is completed successfully, edit the WIN.INI file and remove the semicolons, save the WIN.INI file and restart Windows.
