WD6X: Cannot Select Words in Some Mac Dialog Boxes with Keyboard

ID: Q120277

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

In some Word for the Macintosh dialog boxes (such as the Tools Envelopes And Labels dialog box on the Envelopes tab), you cannot select a word in a text box by pressing Command key+SHIFT+LEFT ARROW or Command key+ SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW.

This does not happen in Word for Windows.

CAUSE

This happens in the text box of any dialog box that is not an editable Rich Text Edit (RTE) dialog box. For example, the Insert Caption, Mark Citation, Mark Index Entry, and the Envelopes tab of the Tools Envelopes And Labels dialog box are not editable RTE dialog boxes.

By contrast, word selection works in an editable RTE dialog box (such as the Labels tab of the Tools Envelopes and Labels dialog box).

NOTE: In an editable RTE dialog box, you can apply multiple font formats and see the results of the formatting in the dialog box. For more information about RTE dialog boxes, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q106047 Definition of Rich Text Edit (RTE) Dialog Boxes

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 98 for the Macintosh.
