WD: Using the Split Subdocument Icon May Create Empty Documents

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0


SYMPTOMS

  • No subdocument is created when you choose the Create Subdocument icon and the active document is a one-paragraph document.


  • -or-

  • Empty or "phantom" subdocuments appear in newly opened master documents. These documents are often saved as M.DOC or M#.DOC, where # represents a number starting at 1.



WORKAROUND

Click the subdocument icon, and then press DELETE to remove any empty subdocuments.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word listed at the beginning of this article.
